Cyber Risk in Canada: What the Data Reveals About Organizational Security in Canada
Infocredit presents the findings of Mastercard’s latest research on RiskRecon, its cybersecurity service, focusing on organizational security in Canada. The study analyzed the cyber risk posture of over 4,900 Canadian organizations, revealing key trends that every business leader, IT professional, and security stakeholder should be aware of.
The research shows that Canadian organizations demonstrate strong cyber hygiene. Using RiskRecon’s assessment, organizations were rated on a scale from A–F and 0–10, with an average score of B (7.5), and 36% achieving the top A rating. Overall, 66% of organizations fall within the average to high rating range, indicating a solid foundation of cybersecurity practices.
Despite this generally strong posture, web-based attacks remain the most prevalent threat across all industries, surpassing other risks such as phishing, insider misuse, and physical theft. The widespread nature of these threats highlights the need for continuous monitoring and proactive defense strategies, regardless of organization size or industry.
Additionally, certain sectors face a higher volume of high-risk issues. Education, manufacturing, and information technology sectors experience significantly more medium- to high-risk cyber issues. Key contributing factors include unpatched software, exposed services, publicly accessible IoT devices, and unencrypted sensitive systems. Colleges and universities, in particular, show the highest concentration of Priority 1, 2, and 3 issues due to their open information-sharing environments.
With these insights, Infocredit emphasizes the importance of ongoing vigilance and strategic cyber risk management to safeguard businesses in Canada.
